‘Whitknits’ was opened in early 2013 after a revamp of the shop and refocus of the business, which had been my ‘bricks and mortar’ knitting shop since 2009. We like to think that textile and craft enthusiasts can come and feel the fibres and drool over the wonderful colours, and be inspired to create all sorts of wonderful things. We believe in a very personal service here, so my helpers and I enjoy advising on all sorts of projects and patterns. As Whitstable is a holiday town, with many visitors from London and further away, our customers may come in looking for a project to do while staying here and often have not knitted before or for a long time.
I (Linda) was born in Kent and studied Fashion at Ravensbourne College of Design, followed by a Masters at The Royal College of Art. This led to a five-year role as Design Consultant at Marks and Spencer’s Head Office in Baker Street. During my career I also worked for Burberry, Debenhams, Wallis and other large retailers (directly and indirectly) and travelled all over the world including New York, Japan and Europe. After a PGCE at Goldsmiths University and a brief spell teaching, I set up my own business in 2009. Originally called ‘ Buzz for Buttons’ I decided to include hand knitting and crochet yarns as I knew how popular crafts such as knitting, crochet and sewing were becoming.
I like to try and have something for everyone, but it is a small shop, so we have a carefully edited range with the focus on natural fibres, whether wool, alpaca, cotton or linen. However, we also have some basic lines for beginners, and children (you are never to young or too old to start!).
From Easter 2016, Whitknits will become a Bergere de France Premiere store, which means that we will stock a good percentage of their range as well as pattern books, Kits and haberdashery. We will also have the best yarns from our other suppliers too, including Designer Yarns, Rowan and West Yorkshire Spinners.
